Chimera Theatre Presents The Hydra Performing Arts Festival

Chimera Theatre’s Hydra Festival is back!

Featuring local, new and innovative works of comedy, theatre and the obscure, audiences will be treated to fantastically fun and brave works made by artists residing in the Kamloops area.

The Festival will run from April 27th to May 13th 2023 at The Effie Arts Collective, located at 422 Tranquille Road.

Preview Night with The Daytime Highs

  • A chance to catch previews of some of the festival’s shows, featuring local dance hall funk band, The Daytime Highs!

Burlesque Improv

  • Kamloops Burlesque is bringing you Burlesque Improv! Gone is the security blanket of the known choreography, well thought out costumes, and pre-planned props. On this stage performers will spin a giant wheel – the wheel will have a selection of 10 great songs, 10 terrible songs, and 1 Performer Pick each! They will then draw from a hat of random props – half good, half bad. Join performers Rosie Bubbles, Ivy Nyx, Dahlia Divine, Lasha Wild, and Ms Coco Creme as our hostess Misty Vine guides them through the most terrifying nights of their performance careers!

That Canadian Magician presents: M is for Magic

  • “M is for Magic” is a fun, spellbinding, and inspiring magic show that will captivate audiences of all ages. Through mesmerizing illusions, astonishing tricks, and a powerful message of following your dreams, this show will transport you to a world where anything is possible.

Caught in a Necromance: a 5e One-shot Liveplay

  • Tabletop gaming is Theatre first and a game second. That’s the philosophy of Comedian, Improviser, and Game Master Andrew Robertson as he brings you Caught in a Necromance, a one-shot dungeon adventure! This is a live play of you-know-what roleplaying game, with local actors, gamers, and comedians as the players. It’s a new set of players every show, so each performance will be totally different! And if you like what you see, consider taking home a print copy of this brand-new original adventure to run with your group at home!

Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School

The concept is simple. You watch a performance artist – in our case – a burlesque artist and then you have opportunity to draw them. Performance art meets life drawing. Join our models, Ivy Nyx and Ms Coco Creme, and our Hostess Misty Vine for some drinking, drawing, and debauchery! Art supplies will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own.

Feeling Crowded with Taryn Anderson

  • Taryn Anderson has been called many things in her life. Sweet? Of course. Witty? Obviously. Hilarious? Most certainly. But her teachers said it best over the years: boy, can that girl talk! Come spend an evening with the Okanagan’s self-appointed trans queen of comedy as she weaves her practiced material through a night of chaotic crowd work. The only one feeling crowded will be her. The audience? Mildly sore ribs at best.

  • The Freudian Slips are proud to present Multiverse Improv! You’ll see a randomly selected dungeon master lead a pair of randomly selected adventurers on a quest to save the Multiverse. The stakes are high and so is the concept!

  • Hosts Todd Sullivan and Carlo Sia dissect some of the kookiest conspiracy theories while under the subtle influence of alcohol and it’s generally a pretty good time.

  • A live squirrel taming demonstration! Join Earl Casablanca as he guides you through the perilous world of squirrel taming. What makes the squirrel such a threat? How can you deal with your own squirrel problem? Does the squirrel really have to be tamed? Come find out!

  • Hydra founding performer Jyelle Vogel returns with Keira Madsen with a live electronic music performance with visual accompaniment

Life with Betty White

  • Betty White saved my life: songs and stories about how a Golden Girl taught me to reconnect with nature, time travel, and love myself. A spoken word tale for animal lovers and tricksters, jokesters and beautiful bitches, interspersed with signature tunes from Devon More and her menagerie of musical instruments.

New Play Series: Treasure Island

  • Chimera Theatre’s New Play Series returns ! The New Play Series is a staged reading of a new, never produced script by a local playwright, giving the author a change to hear their work out lout, receive feedback, and work towards a final draft for publication or production. This years presentation is Treasure Island by Zack Fernstrom. Admission for this show is by donation!

Sweeping Meditations

  • Sweeping Meditations is an interactive, storytelling comedy which features over 20 brooms, complex stories of heartbreak, and some great meditation fart jokes. Winner of the Kelowna Fringe Festival’s 2022 “Pick of the Fringe – Best Solo Show”, Erin Scott will delight, inspire, and get you sweeping in this meditation on life, love, and loss. *audience is invited to bring their own brooms from home.

Tonight’s the Night with Zorblax, Destroyer of Worlds

  • Tonight’s the Night is a live talk show with a strong focus on the arts. Our host, Zorblax, Destroyer of Worlds travelled from Mononopolis all the way to Kamloops to explore what art is like here on Earth through the most human medium of all: the late night talk show.
