Tough and sweet like gravel in honey, she can make you laugh and cry, think and ache -all in the same hour. Storvold’s music seeks to tell a story, to challenge us, to sparkdelight, and to touch a fragile part of the human spirit. Funny and fresh-faced, this storysinger is quickly gaining attention across Canada as a voice to be reckoned with, harkening in a new generation of folk icons.
Maddie Storvold is the proverbial black sheep love child of folk singer Joan Baez andcomedian Steven Wright. Her songs “could well be heard drifting out of a GreenwichVillage folk club in the 1960’s” (Edmonton Folk Fest). Born on an airforce base inNorthern Alberta, but raised a nomad, based in the Middle East, she had traveled toover 30 countries by the time she turned 18 and moved back to Canada to complete adegree in English & Philosophy. This wealth of diverse experiences and the intimatestudy of the craft of words can certainly be heard in the singer’s music. In February2019, Storvold released a ballad, “Don’t Say You Love Me”, written and produced byBryan Adams. The single shot to #1 on the country charts in less than 3 hours. As a liveperformer, Storvold has been described as having a “commanding stage presence, aquirky sense of humour, and a knack for capturing moments in song” (Vue Weekly) – likeif Joni Mitchell did stand-up. A fast regular on the festival circuit, Storvold has broughtstories and songs to the Edmonton Folk Fest, Canmore Folk Fest, Tiny Lights, BearCreek Folk Festival, Wild Mountain Music Festival, Festival d’ete, Cavendish BeachMusic Festival, Calgary Stampede, Interstellar Rodeo, and many more. She offers acatalog of tender flower folk – with a splash of piss and vinegar – at the forefront of anew generation of storytellers.
